College English Course Description: This year-long class will cover many aspects of the English Language Arts, including vocabulary, grammar, writing, research, and literature. This college-preparation curriculum develops the following skills: learning new vocabulary words using etymology and context clues; identifying main idea and details in reading, writing and note taking; identifying the subject and verb of a sentence; writing effective sentences by avoiding fragment and run on errors; using commas correctly; writing an effective thesis statement or topic sentence; using resources available in the library and on the web to perform effective research; and using the Keys to Reading Comprehension to improve comprehension skills. Students will practice the ACT test format on grammar and reading tests throughout the year. Students will also practice responding to ACT writing prompts.
