Science Concepts for Success
Grade Level: 11
Prerequisite: GLS or Biology
Credit: 1 per semester
Term: Full Year
Course Description: Chemistry is an elective course that will help students meet the graduation requirement of two years of science. Chemistry is normally taken during the sophomore year after successful completion of Biology or, in certain circumstances, General Life Science (GLS).

Chemistry is a physical science which deals with the structure and composition of materials and the changes these materials undergo. Topics covered are atomic theory, mole concept, kinetic theory, structure and bonding. Acids, bases, and a detailed study of chemical reactions complete the course.

Course Description: Physics is an elective course that will be taken by Juniors and Seniors wishing to take more than the two years of science required for graduation. Physics is a physical science which deals with the study of matter and energy and their changes, with emphasis on energy. Such topics as force, motion, the atom, sound, light, and electricity are discussed.

An in-depth study of the above topics involves the use of scientific and mathematical formulas. The material is presented so that the students will have a better understanding of everyday events.

Course Description: This is a Junior class that is designed to better prepare students to take the Science portion of the PSAE. This class will be taken by Juniors who wish to take only two years of science to satisfy the science graduation require. We will do a number of units in Science but we will also concentrate on how to take the ISBE Science test and the ACT Science Reasoning Test.

We will begin the school year with a review of the Scientific Method, scientific experimental techniques, and method of collecting data. During the remainder of the first semester we will focus on Physical Science with a unit on Sound & Light. During the Sound & Light unit we will cover material on waves, nature, and properties of sound and light, along with the electromagnetic spectrum.

We start the second semester doing a unit of Electricity and Magnetism. During this unit we will cover material on electricity, magnetism, and motion. Also during the second semester we will do an Earth Science unit focusing on Earth: The Water Planet, which includes studies of fresh waters and oceans.
